Last week, my family and I took a much-needed spring break trip to Clearwater Beach, Florida—a destination that holds a special place in my heart since I grew up there. What was originally planned as our spring break in March got rescheduled, but we made it happen. My husband, three of our kids, and I spent four glorious days (plus a travel half-day) soaking up the sun, spending quality time with family and friends, and simply relaxing by the beach.

One of the best things about a beach vacation? Packing is straightforward!
Clearwater Beach is incredibly easy to pack for, especially when you’re staying right on the island where everything you need is within reach. The beach has grown and developed so much that you don’t need to venture far from your accommodation to find shops, restaurants, and activities.
I’m happy to report that I packed just right for this trip—I wore almost everything I brought (except one spare outfit I always pack just in case). Keep reading for my complete Clearwater Beach packing list!
What I Considered When Packing
Before I started packing, I thought carefully about several factors that would shape my suitcase. With only 4.5 to 5 full days on the beach, I knew I didn’t need to overpack. A shorter trip means fewer outfit changes and the ability to rewear items, which helped me be intentional about what I brought rather than just grabbing everything. I also watched the weather forecast closely leading up to the trip and knew we’d be dealing with hot, humid, and sunny conditions the entire time. This gave me confidence in packing primarily lightweight, breathable pieces while still remembering to include layers for those chilly evenings.
Since our trip was designed to be relaxing—mornings with coffee and brunch, afternoons at the beach, and evenings with casual dinners—I packed accordingly. I didn’t need anything fancy or adventurous; comfortable, practical pieces were all I needed. Plus, staying right on the beach where shops and restaurants are nearby meant I wasn’t concerned about traveling far. And having grown up in the Clearwater Beach area, I was familiar with the pace and vibe of the destination, which helped me pack smarter and with more confidence.
Clothing
Travel Outfits
Since travel days are part of the vacation, I made sure to pack comfortable outfits for getting there and back. I wore an outfit set for traveling to Clearwater Beach, and for the return trip home, I packed sweatpants. I was hoping to snag a Clearwater Beach sweater as a souvenir, and I’m happy to say I ended up buying two! I wore one of the sweaters with my sweatpants for the flight home, which was perfect for staying cozy during travel.

Tops
I packed a mix of layering tanks and regular tanks/shirts to keep things simple and versatile. I brought 3 layering tanks and 4 regular tanks/shirts, which gave me plenty of options for layering during cooler moments or wearing solo on hot days.

Bottoms
For bottoms, I packed a variety of shorts and jeans to cover all my bases:
- 2 denim shorts
- 1 linen short
- 1 pair of cropped jeans
- 1 pair of full-length jeans
I wore everything except the full-length jeans, but I was glad to have them as an option. The cropped jeans became my go-to for cooler dinners—I’d simply change into them while keeping the same top. The linen short was perfect for those in-between moments when you want something breathable but more polished than denim.
Dresses
I packed 1 maxi dress as a “just in case” option for a fancier dinner. While I didn’t end up wearing it on this trip, it was essential to have available. You never know when plans might change!
Layers
I brought a lightweight cropped trench coat in a soft light blue, and it was absolutely essential. Clearwater Beach can get surprisingly chilly at night, especially when you’re sitting by the water or heading out for an evening. This coat was the perfect layer—cropped so it didn’t feel too heavy, and light enough for the warm days but substantial enough to keep me comfortable when temperatures dropped. If you’re planning a beach trip, don’t skip the layers!
Footwear
I packed three pairs of shoes:
- Reef sandals (my MVP!)
- Sneakers
- Boots
Honestly? I wore my Reef sandals the entire time, and they matched every single outfit. They’re comfortable for all-day beach wear and easy to slip on and off. I only wore the sneakers for traveling to and from the airport, and the boots didn’t get worn at all. Next time, I’ll skip the boots and just bring sneakers for travel. The sandals were so versatile and comfortable that they were really all I needed for a beach vacation like this.
Beach Gear & Swimwear
Swimsuits
I packed 3 swimsuits for the trip, thinking I’d need the variety. However, after experiencing the actual vacation, I realized that 2 swimsuits would have been sufficient. With time to rinse and dry between beach days, you really don’t need as many as you might think. If you’re doing laundry at your hotel or accommodation, one or two quality swimsuits will get you through just fine.
Cover-ups
I brought 1 cover-up for the trip, and I quickly learned that 2 would have been ideal. A cover-up is essential when you’re moving between the beach and other areas—whether it’s heading to lunch, popping into a shop, or just needing a layer between your wet swimsuit and the air conditioning. Having a second one would have meant I could wear one while the other dried after being in the ocean. I’ll definitely pack two next time!
Beach Bag Essentials
For my daily beach bag, I kept it simple and brought sunscreen—that was really the main thing I packed specifically for beach days. However, I was lucky enough to have my sister living about an hour away from where we were staying. She generously lent us all her beach gear, including 4 beach chairs, a cooler, a wagon, and a tent to set up for shade during our time there. The hotel also offered rentable cabanas on the beach if you wanted additional comfort and protection from the sun.
Key takeaway: Sunscreen is non-negotiable. We actually ran out during the trip and had to buy more, so don’t underestimate how much you’ll need when you’re spending full days in the Florida sun!
Toiletries & Personal Care
Hair Care
Since I grew up in the Clearwater Beach area, my hair is already accustomed to the humidity, so I didn’t need any special products to combat frizz or salt water damage. I also made a conscious choice not to go under the water while swimming, which helped keep my hair in better condition throughout the trip.
My go-to strategy for keeping cool and managing my hair in the beach environment was simple: I kept my hair up in a clip or ponytail most of the time. This not only kept me cooler in the hot, humid weather, but it also prevented the constant battle with windblown, tangled hair. It’s a practical solution that works beautifully at the beach.
Toiletries
I always pack travel-sized toiletries for my hair care products, but I bring my full-sized makeup and skincare products. It’s simply too expensive to buy everything in travel sizes, and I’ve found that my regular skincare and makeup routine is worth the extra luggage space. This balanced approach keeps my luggage from getting too heavy while ensuring I have my trusted products for my skin and face.
Sun Care
Beyond sunscreen, I didn’t pack any additional sun care products before the trip. The beauty of Clearwater Beach is that it’s so developed and accessible—if I had needed anything else, I could have easily purchased it there. We did end up buying extra sunscreen during our stay since we ran out, but otherwise, we were able to pick up souvenirs and any necessities without having to travel far from the beach.
Miscellaneous/Accessories
Jewelry
I kept my jewelry minimal for this trip, which is always the smart move at the beach. Salt water and sand aren’t kind to accessories! I wore my wedding rings, a simple necklace, and a pair of diamond stud earrings. These pieces are timeless, versatile, and won’t get damaged or lost in the chaos of beach days.
Beach Essentials
Beyond clothing and swimwear, a few other items made my beach days better:
- Phone: Essential for capturing memories and staying connected, but keep it protected from sand and water!
- Portable speaker: I’d highly recommend bringing one if you enjoy music. There’s nothing quite like listening to your favorite playlist while relaxing on the beach or lounging in your beach setup.
- Book: If you’re a reader, definitely pack a book (or two!). Downtime by the beach is the perfect opportunity to catch up on that novel you’ve been meaning to read.
Key Takeaways/Tips
- Pack layers, especially pants and a jacket. This was one of my biggest takeaways from the trip. While Clearwater Beach is hot and sunny during the day, temperatures can fluctuate significantly, and evenings can get surprisingly chilly. I brought a lightweight cropped trench coat in light blue that was absolutely perfect for those cool nights on the beach. Having a pair of cropped jeans or full-length jeans on hand meant I could easily transition from daytime beach wear to evening comfort without sacrificing style.
- Two swimsuits and two cover-ups are ideal. You’ll want options that can dry between uses, and having backups means you’re never stuck in a wet swimsuit for longer than necessary.
- Invest in one great pair of sandals. My Reef sandals were worn almost exclusively throughout the trip. Find a pair you love, and you’ll wear them more than you’d expect.
- You don’t need to overpack. Clearwater Beach is so developed and accessible that if you forget something, you can easily pick it up while you’re there. I ran out of sunscreen and was able to grab more without any hassle.
- Keep your beach packing simple. The beauty of a beach vacation is that it doesn’t require complicated outfits or excessive luggage. Stick to basics, choose versatile pieces, and you’ll have everything you need.
Conclusion
Overall, I felt really good about my packing choices for this Clearwater Beach getaway. I wore almost everything I brought, which means I hit that sweet spot of packing just enough without overdoing it. The beach really is one of the easiest destinations to pack for, especially when you’re staying right on the island where everything is accessible.
If I were to pack for a Clearwater Beach trip again, I’d make a few small adjustments. I’d skip the boots entirely and the extra sneakers since I really only needed them for travel days. I’d also bring one fewer swimsuit—two is truly sufficient instead of three. And most importantly, I’d pack two cover-ups instead of one to have more flexibility throughout the days.
Would I go back? Absolutely! Since my family lives in the Clearwater Beach area, it’s a destination we’ll always return to. There’s something special about visiting a place where you have deep roots and cherished memories. We’re already planning our next trip for April 2027, and I can’t wait to create even more memories with my family in this beautiful spot.
