After living with bare windows, mismatched furniture, and a generally unfinished vibe in our master bedroom for far too long, I finally decided it was time for a change.
What started as a simple urge to buy curtains quickly turned into a full refresh—complete with new DIY projects, fresh decor, and a few smart purchases that made all the difference. Our bedroom went from feeling empty and unstyled to a cozy, cohesive retreat that truly feels like us.
In this post, I’m sharing all the master bedroom updates we made, from building custom nightstands and a bench to adding a built-in cat condo, new bedding, and a special music corner for my husband. If you’re looking for inspiration to update your own bedroom, I hope our journey gives you plenty of ideas!
Why We Needed a Change
- Our master bedroom felt bare and unfinished, with just builder-grade blinds and no curtains or personal touches since we moved in.
- The furniture was mismatched, and the room always looked cluttered—especially with cat towers and scratchers taking up a corner.
- I wanted the space to feel cozy, cohesive, and intentional, not just a place where we dropped the bed and called it done.
- We needed more functional pieces, like a bedroom bench, better nightstands, and a built-in cat condo to clean up the clutter and make the room work for us (and our cats).
- I also wanted to finally hang some artwork, style the dresser, and create a music corner for my husband—little touches that make the room feel truly ours.
The DIY Projects That Made the Room
Tackling a few DIY projects was the key to transforming our bedroom from bare and mismatched to cozy and custom. Here’s what I built:
Built-In Cat Condo: The first project was a built-in cat condo in our breezeway. This cleaned up a corner that was always cluttered with cat scratchers and towers. Now, the cats have a beautiful, functional space that blends right in with the room. I even styled it with some plants so it feels intentional, not just “for the cats.” The best part? The cats love it—they’re always playing or napping there!

Modern Nightstands: After the cat condo, I realized how much the old nightstands clashed with our bed and dresser. I couldn’t find any that matched our style and budget, so I built them myself using scraps and a few new 2x2s. These are my favorite project in the room—modern, spacious, and packed with features like USB and wireless charging and velvet-lined drawers. They turned out even better than I hoped and cost a fraction of what I would have paid for new ones.

Bedroom Bench: Once the nightstands were done, I decided to build a bedroom bench. Again, nothing in stores was the right size or price, so I made one myself. It’s the perfect finishing touch at the end of our bed and ties the room together.

Each of these projects was a new challenge for me, but I’m so glad I took them on. They not only saved us money but also gave our bedroom a truly custom look that fits our needs and style perfectly.
Fresh Decor & Styling Touches
Once the big DIY projects were finished, it was time to focus on the details that would really make the room feel complete. I started by adding soft, neutral curtains from Amazon (with rods from IKEA) to frame the windows and instantly make the space feel cozier and more finished. For the bed, I chose a medium denim blue bedding set from Home Sense that gives the room a calm, inviting vibe and makes the bed a true focal point.

Artwork was next on my list. After searching for months, I finally found the perfect painting at Home Sense—it has touches of blue, gold, black, and neutrals, tying together all the colors I’ve used throughout the room. To finish off the dresser, I added a large white vase with some stems, a few books, and other decorative pieces for a layered, collected look.

I also picked up new lamps for the nightstands from HomeGoods, which add both style and function. All these little touches—curtains, bedding, artwork, and decor—helped transform the bedroom from a bare, mismatched space into a cozy, cohesive retreat that feels truly ours.

Creating a Music Corner
One of my favorite updates in our master bedroom was finally giving my husband a dedicated music corner. There’s a little nook next to our bed and window that was just begging for some personality. I hung his guitars on the wall using guitar hooks, turning them into both functional instruments and beautiful wall art. We’re still on the hunt for the perfect swivel chair so he can sit and play comfortably, and his amps will live in that corner as well.

This small change made a big impact—not only does it give my husband a space to enjoy his music, but it also adds a personal, creative touch to the room. I love how the guitars look displayed on the wall, and I can’t wait to finish the corner with a comfy chair and maybe a small side table for his gear.
The Results: A Cozy, Cohesive Retreat
Now that all the updates are complete, our master bedroom feels like a completely different space. It’s cozy, uncluttered, and so much lighter than before. The mismatched furniture and bare windows are gone, replaced by custom pieces, soft textiles, and thoughtful decor that make the room feel intentional and inviting.
My favorite part is definitely the nightstands—they’re big, functional, and I love that I was able to build them myself for a fraction of the cost of store-bought options. The built-in cat condo keeps the room tidy and gives our cats a space they truly love, while the new bench and music corner add both style and function.
The color palette of soft neutrals, creams, and shades of blue ties everything together and creates a calm, relaxing atmosphere. Every detail, from the curtains to the artwork, helps the room feel finished and uniquely ours. It’s finally a space where we can unwind at the end of the day and truly feel at home.
Budget & Shopping Tips
We didn’t set a strict budget for our bedroom updates, but I was mindful to keep every purchase affordable and make the most of DIY whenever possible. Building the nightstands, bench, and cat condo myself saved us hundreds of dollars compared to buying similar pieces new. Plus, I was able to customize everything to fit our space and style perfectly.
For decor and finishing touches, I shopped at Home Sense and HomeGoods for budget-friendly finds, and ordered the curtains from Amazon. The bedding was also a Home Sense score, and the curtain rods came from IKEA for just a few dollars each.
My top tips for updating your bedroom on a budget:
- Start with one corner or a simple update, like curtains, to soften the room and build momentum.
- Don’t be afraid to DIY—custom pieces can be more affordable and meaningful than store-bought.
- Shop discount stores and keep an open mind; sometimes the perfect piece shows up when you least expect it.
- Stick to a cohesive color palette to make everything feel intentional, even if you’re mixing old and new.
- Add personal touches, like artwork or a music corner, to make the space truly yours.
You don’t need a huge budget to create a bedroom you love—just a little creativity, patience, and a willingness to try something new!
What’s Next?
Even though our master bedroom feels almost complete, there are still a few finishing touches I’d love to add. The main thing left on my list is finding the perfect swivel chair for my husband’s music corner. I want him to have a comfortable spot to sit and play his guitars, and I think a stylish chair will really finish off that area.
Other updates I’m dreaming about include buying and installing a new ceiling fan, replacing the blinds, adding moulding to the walls for extra character, and possibly painting an accent wall to bring in more depth and color. I’d also love to update the fireplace with a wrap-around, floor-to-ceiling tile treatment to make it a true focal point in the room.
For now, though, I’m so happy with how far the room has come and how much more inviting it feels. Of course, I’m always open to new ideas—so who knows what little updates or DIYs might happen next!
