February Thrifted vs. Styled

February was a month of bold finds, cozy layers, and a few unexpected style surprises. As I continue my style challenge, I’ve found myself getting even more intentional about what I bring home from the thrift store—and how I actually wear those pieces in real life.

There’s something so satisfying about scoring a unique item secondhand, then finding new ways to make it work with the rest of my wardrobe.

February Thrifted Vs. Styled

This month’s thrifted haul was a mix of practical staples and statement pieces, from classic wool coats and cashmere sweaters to pleated skirts and a faux leather midi that instantly became a favorite. Some items filled gaps I’d been hoping to address, while others were spontaneous “gasp and grab” moments that ended up being surprisingly versatile.

In this post, I’m sharing everything I thrifted in February, how I styled each piece, and what I learned along the way. Whether you’re a seasoned thrifter or just looking for some fresh outfit inspiration, I hope you’ll find a little encouragement (and maybe a few ideas) for your own closet refresh!

What I Thrifted in February

February’s thrifting adventures brought a mix of practical staples, cozy layers, and a few statement pieces that I couldn’t resist. Some finds were on my wish list, while others were happy surprises that ended up fitting seamlessly into my wardrobe. Here’s everything I brought home this month:

  • Maroon/Berry Midi Skirt ($7.99): A pleated, midi-length beauty in a rich berry color. I rarely wear skirts, but this one was too gorgeous to pass up.
  • Brown Scarf ($3.99): Not cashmere, but a beautiful brown shade that matches my new brown wool coat perfectly. This one is coming with me to NYC.
  • Long Black Wool Overcoat ($28.36): A major wish list item crossed off! I can’t find a care tag, but it feels like 100% wool and is the perfect classic layer.
  • Navy Cotton/Cashmere Sweater ($5.99): I don’t have many sweaters, so this soft, perfectly fitting one was a must.
  • Brown Madewell Cotton/Wool Sweater ($6.99): Slowly growing my sustainable sweater collection, and this rust brown color goes with everything.
  • Cream Trench Coat ($14.91): Didn’t need it, but it fits like a glove and has a removable liner for extra warmth.
  • Black/Brown Plaid Cashmere Scarf ($12.91): 100% cashmere and a beautiful plaid that works with both my black and brown coats.
  • Faux Leather Midi Skirt ($10.49): Not on my wish list, but the fit and flare was too good to leave behind. Not shiny, so it feels elevated and versatile.
  • Red Plaid Skirt ($4.99): Took a chance on this one—unsure if it’s wool, and it’s a little snug, but I’m hoping a small alteration will make it work.
  • Long Red Wool Coat ($19.81): A statement piece that’s too gorgeous to pass up. 100% wool, fits like a glove, and looks almost brand new.
  • White Sweater ($2.50): Cropped with a bell sleeve—great for layering and a fun detail.
  • Black Silk Shirt ($4.99): 100% silk and fits like a dream. I grabbed it to pair with the faux leather skirt, but it works with so many outfits.
  • Blue Cotton/Silk Shirt ($3.99): Beautiful color and detail stitching. 90% cotton, 10% silk, so it’s soft and unique.
  • Maroon/Berry Long Sleeve Tee ($3.99): A gorgeous color and perfect for layering.
  • Light Brown Long Sleeve Tee ($3.99): Finally found long sleeves that are actually long enough—great for variety in cooler weather.
  • Black Cashmere 3/4 Sleeve Sweater ($4.45): Another “wash and shrink” find, but it fits perfectly and is so soft.
  • Navy Wool Sweater ($4.45): 100% merino wool, thin enough to layer but also stands on its own.
  • Theory Cashmere Sweater ($19.99): Another beautiful cashmere sweater for my collection. I think I’m officially set on sweaters and long sleeve tees for a while!
  • Knit Tank ($7.99): Picked this up with spring break in mind—envisioning it with cutoff shorts and sandals for Florida.

Each of these pieces brought something new to my closet, whether it was a pop of color, a cozy layer, or a classic staple. Some were wish list finds, while others were spontaneous additions that I’m excited to style in the months ahead.

How I Styled My Thrifted Finds

2/3: Leather Jacket Switch-Up

The 75 Hard Style Challenge: Week 5

Today I originally had a different outfit planned, but after getting dressed I switched to my new leather jacket from last month. It was finally warming up after the winter storm, and the jacket was the perfect choice for running errands and a dentist appointment for my son. I love how it instantly elevated a simple jeans-and-tee look and made me feel put together and a little edgy.

2/5: Cotton-Cashmere Sweater Love

The 75 Hard Style Challenge: Week 6

I’m really loving today’s sweater—a thrifted find that’s 95% cotton and 5% cashmere. It’s super soft, thick, and warm, with a slight bell sleeve that adds a pretty detail. I paired it with my lighter ribcage Levi’s, but I think it would also look great with darker wash jeans and my new denim trench. This sweater is definitely a contender for my NYC trip.

2/11: Rust Madewell Sweater Outing

The 75 Hard Style Challenge: Week 6

Lunch with a friend and a little shopping at Homesense called for my new-to-me thrifted Madewell sweater in a beautiful rust/orange color. I styled it with wide leg jeans for a relaxed but pulled-together look. I love how this sweater adds a pop of color and feels both cozy and chic—perfect for a casual day out.

2/18: Thrifting & Closet Cleanout

The 75 Hard Style Challenge: Week 7

Started the day with long sleeves and a jacket, then ended up in just the long sleeve tee as it warmed up. I did a little thrifting before heading to NYC and found a couple of gems I can’t wait to wear. I also donated four bags of old clothes and sold some more to a consignment shop. It felt good to clear out space and make room for new favorites.

2/19: NYC Arrival & Statement Coats

The 75 Hard Style Challenge: Week 8

NYC arrival day! I had two outfits: for the plane, I wore my favorite sweat set and my new brown wool coat—super comfortable and perfect for travel. For exploring and dinner, I changed into an all-black look with my favorite sequin pants, a black top, and my new red wool coat. I got so many compliments on the coat, and both wool coats kept me perfectly warm throughout the day.

2/20: Thrifting & Faux Leather Skirt Night

Thrifting in NYC! I wore my thrifted cashmere sweater, lightwash Levi Ribcage jeans, and my brown wool coat. The weather was unusually warm, and this outfit was just right for walking the city and hopping on and off the subway.

For dinner, I changed into my new thrifted faux leather skirt, a thrifted long-sleeve silk top, and my red coat. Everything was comfortable, stylish, and warm enough for a chilly NYC night.

2/22: Travel Home Comfort

The 75 Hard Style Challenge: Week 8

Traveling home meant comfort was key. I wore jeans and a sweater for the flight—an outfit I’d planned to wear when I landed in NYC but didn’t get to. As soon as I got home, I changed into pajamas and relaxed, appreciating the comfort of my favorite basics after a busy trip.

2/23: Errands in Easy Layers

The 75 Hard Style Challenge: Week 8

Dishwasher shopping with the hubby called for a long-sleeve tee, a vest, and my favorite Levi ribcage jeans. I went with sneakers since my feet were still tired from all the NYC walking. The outfit ended up being perfect as it warmed up outside, and I felt comfortable and casual for a day of errands.

Hits, Misses, and Lessons Learned

Hits:

  • My thrifted wool coats (both the brown and the red) were absolute MVPs this month. They kept me warm in NYC, looked stylish, and earned me plenty of compliments—proof that secondhand outerwear can be both practical and statement-making.
  • The cotton/cashmere and cashmere sweaters I picked up were in constant rotation. They layered beautifully, worked for both casual and dressier looks, and made me realize I’m finally set on cozy knits for a while.
  • The faux leather midi skirt was a surprise favorite. Even though it wasn’t on my wish list, it turned out to be super versatile and easy to dress up or down.
  • My new scarves (especially the plaid cashmere) added warmth and a pop of pattern to so many outfits.

Misses:

  • The red plaid skirt was a bit of a gamble. It’s a little snug in the waist and I’m still not sure about the fabric. I’m hoping a small alteration will make it work, but if not, it might end up back in the donation pile.
  • I picked up a couple of long sleeve tees for layering, but realized I probably didn’t need both. Sometimes it’s easy to overdo it on basics when you find a good deal.
  • I passed on a fur coat in NYC because the sleeves were too short—reminding me that even a great find isn’t worth it if the fit isn’t right.

Lessons Learned:

  • Don’t settle for “almost right.” If something doesn’t fit perfectly or fill a real gap, it’s better to leave it behind—even if it’s a great deal.
  • Outerwear and cozy layers are always worth the investment (even secondhand), especially for winter trips.
  • It’s okay to experiment with statement pieces, but the real heroes are the versatile staples you reach for again and again.
  • Thrifting is about patience and intention. The best finds are the ones that make you excited to get dressed, not just the ones that were cheap or trendy.

Looking Ahead

As I head into March, I’m feeling more confident in my style and more selective about what I bring home from the thrift store. My closet is finally starting to feel like it reflects who I am and how I want to dress—cozy, practical, and with a few fun statement pieces thrown in. I’m excited to start thinking about spring, lighter layers, and maybe even styling that knit tank I picked up for our upcoming Florida trip.

I’m also planning to keep refining my wish list and focusing on quality over quantity. If I don’t find anything that truly excites me, I’m happy to wait. The best part of this challenge has been learning to trust my instincts, enjoy the process, and celebrate the little wins—whether it’s a perfect coat, a new favorite sweater, or just feeling good in what I wear every day.
