Today, I’m sharing how I transformed the side of my kitchen island into a custom built-in DIY hidden litter box cabinet. I wanted a solution that was both functional and stylish—something that would keep the litter box out of sight but still easily accessible for my furry friends.
Not only does this do that, but it also blends seamlessly with my kitchen design. In this post, I’ll walk you through how I turned an ordinary kitchen island into a hidden haven for my cats, making life cleaner, easier, and a whole lot prettier!

Why Build a Hidden Litter Box Cabinet?
Let’s face it—litter boxes are a necessary part of cat ownership, but they’re rarely something you want on display. I’ve tried tucking them away in corners, closets, and even behind furniture, but nothing ever felt truly out of sight or easy to clean. Plus, the lingering odors and scattered litter always seemed to find their way back into my living spaces.
That’s when I realized I needed a better solution—one that would blend seamlessly with my home’s design while still being practical for my cats. By building a dedicated litter box cabinet into my unused kitchen island space, I could finally keep the litter box hidden, reduce mess, and make cleaning up a breeze. Not only does it keep my kitchen looking tidy, but it also gives my cats a private, comfortable spot all their own.
Step 1: Demo Day!
Every great DIY starts with a little demolition! I began by removing the original cabinet paneling from the side of my kitchen island, expecting a quick and easy reveal. Instead, I discovered that the entire island was wrapped in drywall—a surprise that added a bit more work to the project. Armed with my tools and a bit of determination, I carefully stripped away all the drywall until I was left with a big, open space underneath the island.

With the drywall gone, I could finally see the potential for my new litter box cabinet. I also removed any studs that were in the way, making sure the area was completely clear and ready for the next phase. This step was a little messy, but it was so satisfying to watch the transformation begin!

Step 2: Creating the Cabinet Box
With the space under the island cleared out, it was time to create the actual “cabinet” that would house the litter box. I measured the opening carefully and got to work cutting pieces of 3/4″ plywood to size. After double-checking my measurements (always a must!), I sanded down the edges for a smooth finish.
To assemble the box, I used pocket holes, screws, and wood glue—this combination made the structure sturdy and durable enough to handle daily use. Once everything was secured, I carefully slid the finished box into the open space under the island.

It was a perfect fit! Seeing the box in place was a huge milestone and made the project feel real.
Step 3: Adding Electricity
Before moving forward, I wanted to make sure the litter box cabinet would be as functional as possible. So, I called in a licensed electrician to install a plug inside the newly created cabinet box. This small addition was a must for my automatic litter box.

Having an outlet right inside the cabinet adds a whole new level of convenience and flexibility to the setup, and I highly recommend considering it if you’re tackling a similar project!
Step 4: Waterproofing & Trimming
Before closing up the cabinet, I wanted to make sure it would stand up to daily use and any potential messes. I coated the entire inside of the box with polyurethane, making it waterproof and easy to clean—an absolute must for any pet project! This extra layer of protection gives me peace of mind and helps the cabinet last for years to come.

Once the polyurethane dried, I moved on to trimming out the newly created cabinet. I added backer trim made from 1/2″ plywood, which gave the face frame trim a solid base for nailing. The face frame itself was crafted from 3/4″ plywood, matching the style of my built-in dog water bowl station.

Securing the face frame to the outside of the box really made the cabinet look polished and integrated with the rest of the kitchen island.
Step 5: Flooring for Felines
With the structure and electrical in place, it was time to make the litter box cabinet comfortable and practical for my furry friends. I headed to Home Depot and found some stick-on carpet squares that were perfect for the floor of the cabinet. These carpet squares are a game-changer—they’re soft on my cats’ paws and help trap litter as they exit the box, keeping the rest of my kitchen cleaner.

One of the best parts about using carpet squares is how easy they are to replace. If there’s ever an accident or a square gets too dirty, I can simply swap out that one piece instead of having to redo the entire floor. After cutting the squares to fit, I secured them in place, making sure the entire floor was covered and ready for kitty traffic.

Step 6: Doors & Pet Access
Now that the inside of the cabinet was ready, it was time to give my cats their own private entrance and make the cabinet blend seamlessly with the rest of the kitchen. I started by cutting doors out of 3/4″ plywood, making sure they matched the dimensions and style of my kitchen island. After sanding the doors smooth, I drilled holes for the hinges and attached them securely to the face frame.

To create easy access for my cats, I cut a large opening in one of the doors and installed a pet door. This way, the cats can come and go as they please, while the litter box stays hidden from view. I used the included hinge screws to secure the doors to the frame and added a stopper so the doors would close at just the right spot every time.

Step 7: Finishing Touches
With the structure, trim, and doors in place, it was time to make everything look seamless and polished. I removed the doors and got to work matching the stain on the face frame and doors to the rest of my kitchen island. Since I had already tackled a similar project with my built-in dog feeding station, I knew exactly which stain to use for a perfect match.

Once the stain and polyurethane were dry, I reattached the doors and made sure everything lined up just right. I also added a door stopper so the doors would close at the perfect spot every time.
The final result?
A built-in litter box cabinet that looks like it’s always been part of my kitchen, keeps the litter box out of sight, and gives my cats a private, comfortable space of their own.

Final Thoughts
This built-in DIY hidden litter box cabinet project turned out to be one of my favorite DIYs—not just because it solved a real problem, but because it added both style and function to my home. My cats love having their own private space, and I love that the litter box is finally out of sight and easy to maintain.

If you’re looking for a way to hide your litter box and upgrade your space, I highly recommend giving this project a try. With a little planning and some elbow grease, you can create a custom solution that works perfectly for you and your pets. Happy building!
