If you have a hallway in your home that feels bland and uninspired, you’re not alone. Our hallway, which connects the formal dining room to the kitchen and living room, was just two blank walls—a space we passed through daily but never really noticed.

That all changed with a little creativity, a trip to IKEA, and a vision for a hallway gallery wall that would bring our family’s favorite memories to life.

Here’s how we transformed our boring hallway into a vibrant, personalized space with a giant gallery wall and picture lighting.

Before: The Blank Canvas

Before we started this project, our hallway was the very definition of bland. It was simply a narrow passage with two blank walls—no art, no photos, nothing to catch your eye as you walked from the formal dining room into the kitchen and living room.

It was a space we passed through countless times a day, but it never felt like it belonged to us or reflected our family’s personality.

The emptiness of the hallway made it the perfect candidate for a dramatic transformation, and I was excited to finally give it the attention it deserved.

Planning the Gallery Wall

My husband and I headed to IKEA to pick out frames. We chose IKEA frames because they’re affordable, come in large quantities, and—most importantly—are all the same style and size, making it easy to create a cohesive look.

We initially bought 15 frames, thinking that would be enough, but once we started hanging them, we realized we wanted the gallery to go all the way to the floor. So, back to IKEA we went, picking up more frames for a total of 20.

To make sure everything would line up just right, I used a laser level. This tool was a total game-changer, helping us keep every row and column perfectly straight. With the frames and layout planned, we were ready to start bringing our vision to life.

Choosing Photos and Arranging the Wall

With our frames ready, the next step was deciding which photos would fill our new gallery wall. We wanted this space to be more than just decoration—it needed to showcase our family.

After sorting through thousands of pictures, we narrowed it down to our favorite moments from the past two years: family vacations, spontaneous adventures, and everyday fun with the kids. Each photo we chose brought back a special memory, making the selection process both joyful and a little nostalgic.

To keep the look cohesive and modern, we printed all the photos in color and used black frames with crisp white mats. We ordered our prints from Walmart, which made the process quick and easy—they arrived right at our doorstep, ready to be framed. Laying out the photos before hanging them helped us visualize the final arrangement and ensure a good mix of portraits and candid shots.

Every image on the wall now serves as a daily reminder of the laughter, love, and adventures we’ve shared as a family. It’s amazing how much energy and warmth these personal touches bring to what was once just an empty hallway.

Hanging the Gallery Wall

Once we had our photos printed and framed, it was time for the most exciting (and a little nerve-wracking) part—hanging the gallery wall. Getting everything perfectly straight and evenly spaced was important to me, so I relied heavily on my trusty laser level. This tool made it so much easier to line up each row and column, ensuring a polished, professional look.

We started by laying out the frames on the floor to finalize the arrangement and spacing. Once we were happy with the layout, I used a hammer and nails to hang each frame, working from the center outward to keep everything balanced.

To prevent the frames from shifting or ending up crooked over time, I added a little sticky tack to the corners. This simple trick keeps everything in place and saves you from constantly straightening frames every time someone walks by.

Surprisingly, the process went smoothly—no major challenges or mishaps. Taking the time to measure, level, and plan ahead made all the difference. By the end, our once-bare hallway was transformed into a stunning gallery that instantly became a focal point in our home.

Adding Picture Lighting

With the gallery wall in place, I wanted to take things a step further and really make our photos stand out—especially in the evenings. Picture lighting was the perfect solution to highlight our favorite memories and add a warm, inviting glow to the hallway.

After researching different options, I decided on beautiful bronze picture lights from Amazon. I loved that they were battery operated and came with remote controls, making them both stylish and practical. No need to worry about wiring or finding an outlet—just a few screws and a screwdriver (or drill) and the lights were up in no time.

The bronze finish added a touch of elegance and complemented the black frames perfectly. The remote controls make it easy to turn the lights on and off or adjust the brightness, which is especially handy when we want to set the mood for guests or just enjoy a cozy evening at home.

Adding picture lighting truly elevated the entire gallery wall, turning it from a simple display into a real showpiece. Now, every photo is beautifully illuminated, and the hallway feels warm and welcoming at any time of day.

The Opposite Wall: Maps and Memories

Once our gallery wall was finished, I couldn’t help but notice how empty the opposite side of the hallway looked in comparison. It felt like the perfect opportunity to continue the transformation and add even more personality to the space. So, we made another trip to IKEA—this time for larger frames to create a statement on the other wall.

Instead of more family photos, I wanted to do something a little different. We decided to showcase maps from all the cities we’ve lived in together as a family—five in total. Each map represents a chapter in our journey, from our first home to where we are now. It’s a unique way to celebrate our story and spark conversations with anyone who visits.

I used the same process for hanging these frames: laser level, hammer, nails, and a bit of sticky tack to keep everything perfectly straight. The larger frames gave the wall a bold look, while the maps added a meaningful, personal touch.

Finishing Touches

With both walls now filled—one with cherished family photos and the other with meaningful maps—the hallway was already feeling transformed. But I wanted to make sure every detail felt intentional and complete. The last step was updating the lighting. I replaced the old can lights with beautiful semi-flush mount fixtures that not only provided better illumination but also added a touch of elegance to the space.

These new light fixtures tie everything together, casting a warm glow that highlights both the gallery wall and the maps. The combination of personalized art, thoughtful lighting, and cohesive design turned our once-bland hallway into a space that feels inviting and uniquely ours.

Now, every time we walk through, we’re greeted by memories, milestones, and a sense of home. It’s amazing how a few finishing touches can elevate a space and make it truly special.

DIY Tips and Lessons Learned

After completing this hallway transformation, I picked up a few tips and tricks that I wish I’d known from the start—and I’m happy to share them with anyone looking to tackle a similar project!

  • Choose matching frames: Using the same style and size of frame makes planning and hanging your gallery wall so much easier. It creates a cohesive look and saves you from the headache of trying to line up mismatched pieces.
  • Use a laser level: This tool is a total game-changer for getting perfectly straight rows and columns. It’s worth the investment for a polished, professional finish.
  • Hang with two nails: If I could do it over, I’d use two nails per frame instead of one. This helps keep the frames from going crooked over time—constantly straightening pictures can get old fast!
  • Sticky tack is your friend: A little bit of sticky tack on the corners of each frame keeps them from shifting, especially in high-traffic areas like hallways.
  • Plan your layout: Lay out your frames and photos on the floor before you start hanging. This lets you play with the arrangement and spacing until you’re happy with the overall look.
  • Don’t be afraid to adjust: Sometimes your original plan might need tweaking—like when we realized we needed more frames to fill the wall. Be flexible and willing to make changes as you go.

The Result

Stepping back and seeing the finished hallway for the first time was such a rewarding moment. What was once a bland, overlooked space is now bursting with energy, color, and personality. The gallery wall filled with our favorite family memories, the maps marking our journey together, and the warm glow from the new lighting have completely transformed the hallway into one of my favorite spots in our home.

Every time I walk through, I’m reminded of the adventures we’ve had, the places we’ve lived, and the love that fills our lives. The hallway now feels like a true reflection of our family’s story—inviting, meaningful, and full of life. I couldn’t be happier with how it turned out, and honestly, I’d do it all over again in a heartbeat.

If you’re thinking about tackling a similar project, I hope our experience inspires you to turn your own blank spaces into something beautiful and uniquely yours.
