After spotting beautiful faux boxwood walls around town, I couldn’t stop thinking about how perfect one would look on our own patio. For months, my husband and I talked about giving our outdoor space a fresh new look, but it wasn’t until we stumbled upon faux boxwood panels on sale at Sam’s Club that we finally decided to make it happen.
Our patio had always been functional, but it lacked personality and style. We already had a comfy sectional and a fire table, but the space felt unloved and uninspired. We wanted a backdrop that would add greenery, texture, and a modern vibe—plus, something that would look amazing behind a new TV and a custom neon sign with our last name.

In this post, I’ll walk you through how we created our own DIY faux boxwood wall, mounted a TV, and added a personalized neon sign to completely transform our backyard patio. If you’re looking for a simple way to upgrade your outdoor living area, keep reading for all the details, tips, and lessons learned!
Before: A Patio in Need of Personality
Before our DIY project, our patio was a classic case of “good bones, but no personality.” While we had the basics—a sectional couch for lounging and a fire table for chilly evenings—the space always felt a bit uninspired and lacked that inviting, homey feel we wanted. The brick wall was bare, and the overall vibe was more “storage area” than “outdoor oasis.”

We knew the patio had potential, but it needed a focal point and a touch of greenery to bring it to life. After seeing faux boxwood walls in local restaurants and trendy spots around town, I was inspired to create something similar at home. I wanted a space that felt fresh, modern, and uniquely ours—a place where we could relax, entertain, and enjoy the outdoors in style.
With a vision in mind and a little push from our random Sam’s Club find, we were finally ready to tackle the transformation and turn our patio into a true extension of our home.
Planning & Materials
Our patio wall space is about 10×10 feet, so we measured the wall to make sure we’d have enough coverage for a lush, seamless look.
We found our faux boxwood panels at Sam’s Club—they ended up being on sale, so we grabbed 12 panels, though we realized we only needed 9 to cover our wall. For the finishing touches, we wanted to add a big-screen TV for outdoor movie nights and a custom neon sign with our last name for a fun, personalized vibe.
The TV is a 75″ Vizio from Sam’s Club, and the neon sign (in our favorite blue) was custom-made by a seller on Etsy.
Here’s a complete list of what we used for our patio makeover:
- Faux boxwood panels (Sam’s Club)
- Tapcon screws & impact driver (Home Depot)
- Hot glue gun (Amazon)
- 75″ Vizio TV (Sam’s Club)
- Custom blue neon sign (“The Meyerings” from Etsy)
We made sure to follow the instructions that came with the boxwood panels, and we picked up extra Tapcon screws and anchors from Home Depot to securely attach everything to our brick wall. The hot glue gun came in handy for securing any stray pieces after cutting panels to fit.
With all our materials ready, we were excited to get started and bring our vision to life!
How We Did It
Step 1: Prep the Patio Before any installation, we gave our patio a serious deep clean. We swept away dirt and debris, wiped down the sectional couch, and cleared out any clutter. This made the space feel instantly fresher and set the stage for the transformation.
Step 2: Install the TV Mount Before hanging anything else, we decided exactly where we wanted the TV to go. We installed the TV mount directly onto the brick wall using heavy-duty brick anchors and tapcon screws from Home Depot. Getting the mount in place first made it much easier to plan the layout for the boxwood panels.
Step 3: Install the Faux Boxwood Panels With the TV mount as our anchor point, we began installing the faux boxwood panels from Sam’s Club. The panels came with pre-drilled holes and clear instructions, so we followed those closely. Using tapcon screws and an impact driver, we attached each panel to the brick wall, working around the TV mount for a seamless look. For panels that needed trimming, we cut them to size and used a hot glue gun to secure any loose pieces.
Step 4: Install the Neon Sign Once the boxwood wall was complete, we mounted our custom blue neon sign (“The Meyerings”) above the TV. We used more Tapcon screws to make sure it was secure. The hardest part was making sure everything was lined up perfectly, but taking our time with measurements paid off.
Step 5: Final Touches After everything was installed, we stepped back to admire the transformation. The lush faux greenery, the glow of the neon sign, and the big-screen TV completely changed the vibe of our patio. We did have to make a couple of extra trips to Home Depot for the right length screws for the neon sign, but overall, the process was easier than we expected.
Lessons Learned & Tips
Every DIY project comes with its own set of surprises, and our faux boxwood wall was no exception! Here are a few things we learned along the way, plus some tips to help your own patio makeover go smoothly:
- Invest in Quality Panels: Not all faux boxwood panels are created equal. Heavier, higher-quality panels look fuller and are less likely to sag over time. It’s worth spending a little extra for a lush, realistic look.
- Plan Your Layout: Take time to measure and plan where everything will go—especially if you’re working around a TV mount or other fixtures. Lining up the panels and making sure the TV and neon sign were centered took the most time, but it made a huge difference in the final result.
- Use Extra Screws for Stability: The panels are heavier than they look, so don’t be afraid to use more screws than the instructions suggest. This will keep everything secure, especially if your wall is exposed to wind or movement.
- Follow the Instructions: The included directions for the boxwood panels were clear and helpful. Don’t skip steps, and make sure to use the right hardware for your wall type.
- Be Ready for Extra Trips: We ended up making a couple of runs to Home Depot for the right length tapcon screws for the neon sign. Double-check your supplies before you start, but don’t stress if you need to make a quick store run.
- Take Your Time with Measurements: Getting everything lined up—especially the TV and neon sign—was the trickiest part. Measure twice (or three times!) before drilling!
Most importantly, have fun with the process! DIY projects are all about making your space your own, and a little patience goes a long way toward a result you’ll love.
The Result
This DIY faux boxwood wall project completely transformed our patio into a space we genuinely love spending time in. The lush greenery adds instant style and personality, the neon sign gives it a fun, custom touch, and the big-screen TV has made our backyard the go-to spot for relaxing evenings and entertaining friends.

We use our patio almost every day now—it’s clean, comfortable, and feels like a true extension of our home.
If you’re thinking about tackling your own patio makeover, I hope our experience inspires you to go for it! With a little planning and some quality materials, you can create a beautiful, functional outdoor space that fits your style and needs.
