This blood orange margarita is a fresh twist on the classic cocktail, made with tequila, blood orange juice, lime juice, orange liqueur, and simple syrup.

I actually made this blood orange margarita last spring, right before I found out I was pregnant. At the time, I kept it off the blog because I had used the very last blood oranges in the fridge, and once they were gone, they were gone. Sharing a seasonal cocktail recipe when readers could not easily find the star ingredient just did not feel quite right.

But now blood orange season is back, and so is this margarita in all its gorgeous reddish-pink glory. It has everything I love about a classic margarita—tequila, lime, and that crisp, citrusy finish—but with the sweet-tart flavor of blood orange juice and a splash of orange liqueur to make it feel a little extra special.

There is also something about blood oranges that makes any drink feel more fun. Maybe it is the color, maybe it is the short season that makes them feel a little precious, or maybe it is just that they instantly make an ordinary drink feel like a happy hour upgrade. Either way, this blood orange margarita is bright, refreshing, and exactly the kind of cocktail that belongs next to tacos, chips and salsa, or a slow weekend evening at home.

And yes, looking at these photos still makes me a little sentimental because this is absolutely the kind of drink I would have loved while waiting out those last few months of pregnancy. Haha. If I could keep blood oranges in the kitchen year round, this one would stay in regular rotation.

What is a Blood Orange Margarita?

A blood orange margarita is a fresh twist on the traditional margarita. It keeps the classic base of tequila and lime juice, then adds blood orange juice and orange liqueur for a drink that is citrusy, vibrant, and a little softer around the edges than the usual version.

Blood oranges bring both flavor and color to the glass. They have a sweet-tart taste that feels a bit deeper and more berry-like than regular oranges, and that rich ruby-pink hue makes the cocktail look just as impressive as it tastes. Paired with tequila, lime, and a salted rim, the result is a margarita that still feels familiar while bringing something a little different to the table.

It is the kind of cocktail that works for taco night, casual entertaining, or any evening when you want something easy to shake up that still feels polished.

Why You’ll Love this Recipe

  • Classic with a twist: You still get that familiar margarita flavor, just brightened up with blood orange juice.
  • Beautiful color: The fresh blood orange gives this drink a naturally bold reddish-pink color that looks gorgeous in the glass.
  • Easy to make: Once your glasses are rimmed, the rest comes together with a quick shake.
  • Perfect for citrus season: This is such a fun way to use blood oranges while they are available.
  • Great for taco night: The bright citrus flavor pairs really well with tacos, chips, and other casual dinner favorites.
  • Flexible ingredient option: If fresh blood oranges are not available, you can still make this with pre-made blood orange juice.

Ingredients

  • Blanco Tequila: The base spirit that gives the margarita its classic character.
  • Orange Liqueur: Adds a sweet citrus note and rounds out the sharper edges of the tequila and lime.
  • Blood Orange Juice: The star ingredient here, bringing a sweet-tart flavor and that stunning color.
  • Lime Juice: Keeps the cocktail bright, balanced, and unmistakably margarita-like.
  • Simple Syrup: Adds a little sweetness to smooth everything out.
  • Salt: Perfect for rimming the glass and balancing the citrus.
  • Fresh Blood Orange Slice and Lime Wedge: Optional, but such a pretty and simple garnish.

Substitutions & Additions

If you can get fresh blood oranges, they are absolutely worth using here. The flavor is brighter and the color is especially beautiful. That said, this recipe still works really well with pre-made blood orange juice if fresh fruit is not in season. You can usually find it in the juice aisle, and sometimes in the international or specialty section depending on the store.

If your blood oranges are especially sweet, you can scale back the simple syrup slightly. If they are more tart, keep the full amount so the drink stays balanced and smooth.

You can also adjust the presentation based on what you have at home. A rocks glass filled with crushed ice works perfectly, but if you prefer a different cocktail glass, that is fine too. The salted rim adds that classic margarita finish, though you can keep just part of the rim salted if you like a lighter touch.

For garnish, a slice of blood orange and a lime wedge are simple and classic. They make the finished drink look polished without adding extra fuss.

How to Make this Recipe

Start by getting your glasses ready. Add water to one shallow dish and salt to another, then dip the rim of each cocktail glass into the water before pressing it into the salt. This gives you that classic margarita rim and adds a nice savory contrast to the citrus. Fill each glass with crushed ice and set them aside.

Next, add ice to your cocktail shaker, followed by the tequila, orange liqueur, blood orange juice, lime juice, and simple syrup. Shake everything well for about 30 seconds. That quick shake chills the drink thoroughly and helps all the citrus and tequila blend into one smooth, refreshing cocktail.

Once the margarita is nice and cold, strain it into the prepared glasses. If you want to make it feel a little extra finished, garnish each glass with a fresh slice of blood orange and a lime wedge. Then serve it right away while it is icy, bright, and at its best.

Cooking Tips & Tricks

Use fresh lime juice if you can. Since this margarita has a short ingredient list, each ingredient really matters, and fresh lime juice gives the drink a much brighter finish than bottled juice.

If you are using fresh blood oranges, roll them on the counter before juicing to help release more juice. A lemon-lime squeezer or citrus press also makes the job much easier.

Shake the drink long enough for it to get properly cold. A full 30 seconds might feel like a little while, but it helps chill the cocktail and blend the citrus, tequila, and orange liqueur into a smoother sip.

If you like your margaritas a little less sweet, start with a smaller amount of simple syrup and adjust from there. And if you love a pronounced salt rim, do not be shy about coating the glass well.

Serving Suggestions

This blood orange margarita is made for casual, fun meals and happy hour moments. It pairs especially well with taco Tuesday, but it would also be perfect with nachos, grilled chicken tacos, shrimp tacos, or a big bowl of chips and fresh salsa.

Serve it in a rocks glass with plenty of crushed ice so it stays nice and cold. For garnish, keep it simple with a thin blood orange slice and a lime wedge. That little bit of extra color makes the drink feel restaurant-worthy without any complicated prep.

If you are serving these for friends, you can rim the glasses ahead of time and line everything up so the cocktails come together quickly once it is time to shake and pour.

Storage Suggestions

This cocktail is best served immediately after shaking. Once poured over ice, it will slowly become diluted, and the fresh citrus flavor is at its brightest right away.

If you want to prep ahead, you can juice the blood oranges and limes in advance and keep the juice chilled until you are ready to make the margaritas. You can also pre-measure the tequila, orange liqueur, blood orange juice, lime juice, and simple syrup, then shake with ice just before serving.

If you are making these for a small gathering, prepping the components ahead is the easiest way to keep things simple without sacrificing flavor.

Recipe FAQ

  • Can I use bottled blood orange juice instead of fresh? Yes. Fresh blood oranges are great when they are in season, but bottled or pre-made blood orange juice works well when you cannot find the fresh fruit.
  • Do I have to salt the rim? No. The salt rim is classic and helps balance the citrus, but you can skip it or salt only half the rim if you prefer.
  • What kind of tequila works best in this recipe? Blanco tequila is a great choice here because it keeps the cocktail bright and crisp.
  • Can I make this ahead of time? You can prep the juice and measure the ingredients ahead, but it is best to shake and pour right before serving.
  • What should I serve with a blood orange margarita? This margarita is especially good with tacos, chips and salsa, or other fresh, savory dishes with a little spice.

This blood orange margarita is such a fun way to give a classic cocktail a fresh seasonal twist. It is bright, citrusy, and easy to make, with blood orange juice adding both beautiful color and a sweet-tart flavor that feels just a little more special than the standard version.

Whether you make it for taco night, a weekend happy hour, or just because blood oranges caught your eye at the store, it is one of those drinks that feels simple but still a little elevated. If blood orange season is here, this is definitely a good excuse to make the most of it.
