When we decided to build our backyard pool, we knew it was the perfect time to refresh the rest of our outdoor spaces, too. With such a unique yard layout, it just made sense to create multiple distinct areas for relaxing, dining, and entertaining.
What started as a simple pool project quickly turned into a full backyard patio transformation—complete with three updated patio spaces and a garden area, each with its own personality and purpose.
From installing a faux boxwood wall and neon sign, to updating our original pergola with new lighting and furniture, and adding a brand new pergola and dining space, we tackled each area with a mix of DIY projects and professional help. The end result is a backyard that feels cohesive, functional, and ready for everything from quiet mornings to big family gatherings.
Original Patio
This patio space was original to the house, but before our makeover, it felt bland, cluttered, and a little neglected. We wanted to give it some character and make it a spot we’d actually want to spend time in.

After seeing faux boxwood walls around town, my husband and I were inspired to create our own. When we spotted the panels at Sam’s Club, we knew it was time to go for it! We installed the boxwood wall ourselves, using Tapcon screws to secure the panels directly into the brick. The process was straightforward, and the instant greenery made a huge difference in the vibe of the space.

To complete the transformation, we added:
- Our existing sectional couch, plus a new loveseat for extra seating
- A cozy outdoor rug to define the area
- A TV for movie nights and game days (no special protection needed since the patio is covered)
- A custom neon sign with our last name, adding a fun, personal touch
Now, this patio feels like a true extension of our home—perfect for relaxing, watching TV, or just enjoying the view of our new pool.
Original Pergola Area
The original pergola was always a nice feature in our backyard, but the space underneath felt a bit underutilized. We used to have a counter-height dining table here, but it didn’t quite fit the vibe we wanted for our new outdoor living space. So, we decided to give this area a complete refresh.

First, we sold the old table and replaced it with a new fire table chat set from Sam’s Club. The new seating is perfect for gathering with friends and family, whether we’re enjoying a cool evening by the fire or just relaxing with a drink. We layered in a soft outdoor rug to anchor the space and make it feel extra inviting.

For lighting, we swapped out the old string lights for hanging lanterns, which add a warm, cozy glow and perfectly match the relaxed atmosphere we were going for. The lanterns are a favorite feature—they bring just the right amount of ambiance without overwhelming the space.
With these updates, the original pergola area has become one of our favorite spots to unwind, chat, and enjoy the backyard—no matter the season.
New Pergola and Dining Area
After the pool was finished, we realized we wanted even more space for outdoor dining and entertaining—especially with the Texas sun making shade a must. A few years ago, we had poured a large concrete pad in this area because grass just wouldn’t grow. With the pool complete, it was the perfect spot to add a huge new pergola, extending all the way to the edge of the house.

We had the pergola professionally built and stained, and then resurfaced the concrete underneath with a “bone white” cool decking coating. Not only does it look fresh and bright, but it also keeps the surface cool on hot days—a huge bonus for bare feet! We love the new look so much that we’re planning to extend the cool decking to the pool area next year.

To make this space functional and inviting, we added:
- A large fire table dining set from Costco, perfect for family meals or roasting marshmallows for s’mores
- Three black hanging lanterns over the dining table, echoing the cozy lighting in our original pergola area but with a modern twist
- Plenty of room for future upgrades, including an outdoor kitchen at the end of the pergola (coming spring 2026—stay tuned for that project!)
This new pergola and dining area has quickly become the heart of our backyard gatherings, offering plenty of shade, seating, and style for everything from casual weeknight dinners to big celebrations.
Garden Area
Tucked to the left side of our backyard is our dedicated garden area—another unique space that helps make our yard feel truly custom. I built the large garden boxes myself, which was definitely a challenge since they’re so big and heavy. During the landscaping phase, we had the professionals help move them into place because they were just too heavy to handle on our own!

Right now, the garden boxes are empty, but we’re already dreaming about what we’ll plant next spring. We’re planning to grow a mix of veggies, herbs, and maybe even some flowers to add color and variety. This space will be perfect for teaching the kids about gardening, enjoying fresh produce, and adding another layer of beauty to our backyard.

Even though the garden is still a work in progress, it’s exciting to have a dedicated spot ready and waiting for our next outdoor project.
A Backyard Made for Living
Transforming our backyard into a true outdoor living space has been such a rewarding journey. By updating each patio area—and adding a garden for future projects—we’ve created a backyard that’s not only beautiful, but also functional for our family’s everyday life and special gatherings.
Whether we’re relaxing by the fire table, watching TV under the boxwood wall, sharing a meal in the new dining area, or planning next season’s garden, every space now has its own purpose and personality. It’s amazing to see how a few thoughtful updates (and a mix of DIY and professional help) can completely change the way you enjoy your home.
