April Thrifted vs. Styled

It’s been another month of my Thrifted vs. Styled series, and I honestly cannot believe April is already over. If you’re new here, this series is where I share what I thrifted during the month, but also how I actually styled and wore those pieces in real life. Because finding something cute at the thrift store is fun, but the real win is making it work in your everyday outfits.

April Thrifted vs. Styled

April was a little bit of everything, weird spring weather in DFW, errands and busy days at home, and a trip to Florida in the middle of the month. It was the perfect month to lean into layers, knit tees, and easy outfits that still feel put together.

This month also tied in perfectly with my low-buy challenge, because I’m still trying to thrift with intention instead of treating the thrift store like a free-for-all. I’m focusing on pieces that fill real gaps, support outfits I already wear, and (when I get lucky) help me check off wish list items, like the faux fur bag I’ve been hoping to find.

In this post, I’m sharing everything I thrifted in April, the outfits I wore throughout the month (including vacation looks), what worked, what didn’t, and what I’m taking into May.

What I Thrifted in April

April was a really fun thrifting month for me because my finds felt both practical and exciting. Practical because I’m clearly still in my knit-and-layering era (DFW spring weather has been all over the place), and exciting because I found a couple pieces that felt like true gems, including a wish list win.

Wish list win

  • Faux fur purse ($6.45): I finally found a gorgeous faux fur bag at Thrift Giant and I’m so happy about it. This has been on my wish list for a while, so finding it for this price felt like a major win, and I cannot wait to wear it.

Standout pieces (the “gems”)

  • Green silk bomber jacket ($9.99): The second I saw this jacket I knew it was coming home with me. It’s a gorgeous silk-style bomber and it’s going to be perfect for layering on those weird Texas spring days. It does have a small stain on the collar, but I’m pretty sure I can get it out.
  • Teal merino wool long sleeve tee ($2.50): Such a good addition to my long sleeve tee collection. It’s lightweight, easy to layer, and one of those pieces I can wear in spring now and again in fall.
  • White tuxedo shirt ($3.50): I’m slowly growing my button down collection and this one is such a fun find. It has a blue lining on the collar and black buttons, and I can see it styled casually with jeans and boots or dressed up with a maxi skirt.

Knit + layering tee era (apparently this is my personality now)

These are the pieces I keep reaching for when I want to feel more styled than a basic tee, without sacrificing comfort.

  • Black lace knit tee ($1): Cropped, knit, and perfect with cropped jeans and sandals.
  • UNICLO white knit sweater ($3.50): Such a good layering sweater-tee for spring and summer.
  • Brown knit metallic tee ($2): Slouchy and easy, but the metallic detail gives it a slightly elevated look.
  • Black/white stripe knit tee ($2.50): I saw it the week before and regretted not grabbing it, so it came home with me this time.
  • Pink and white knit tee ($4.99): Too cute to pass up and I can’t wait to style it with white shorts.

Closet staples that make outfits easier

  • Loft cotton tank ($2.50): I’m always on the lookout for good cotton tanks because they make layering so much easier.

How I Styled My Thrifted Finds

April felt like one long mix of unpredictable weather, errands, and then a mid-month Florida reset, so I’m grouping my outfits into little “chapters” again to make it easier to follow.

Chapter 1: Errands, but make it cute

  • 4/2: I had a bunch of errands to run and wanted to be comfy, so I wore my H&M jeans, a thrifted blue t-shirt, my new suede boots, and topped it off with my thrifted fringe bag. The tee is 100% cotton, which makes it feel more elevated than a flimsy basic tee, and the light blue color is one of my favorites.

Chapter 2: DFW weather whiplash (cold fronts + layering wins)

4/4: We were heading to the mall and arcade with the kids, and I originally planned Ribcage jeans + a button down + new boots, but the cold front had other plans. I threw on my thrifted blue suede coat and it instantly finished the outfit. I still cannot believe I found that coat.

4/7: Another chilly day in DFW, so I stuck with light layers again: my thrifted blue denim button down layered over blue denim jeans, plus my new brown boots and a matching brown belt. I felt cute and comfortable all day, and the denim shirt was the perfect “morning chill to afternoon warm-up” layer. I also had errands (including returning a smaller pair of boots to Cavender’s) and did a lap around the mall to get steps in and get out of the house for a bit.

Chapter 3: Florida outfits (easy, humid-weather dressing)

Packing List: Clearwater Beach, FL

4/14: First day of vacation and I was so excited. After we landed in Florida, I changed into my new linen shorts and a blue tank from Target, then threw on my Reef Vista High Water Sandals and was ready to go. I love the shorts, but they’re a little roomy in the hips and thighs (they fit in the waist), but they’re so comfortable and flowy that they still earned a spot in the suitcase.

Packing List: Clearwater Beach, FL

4/15: Today’s outfit wasn’t thrifted, but the bag was, and I forgot to include it in photos the day before. This was the only bag I brought on the trip and it ended up being the perfect little beach tote for my wallet and essentials.

Packing List: Clearwater Beach, FL

4/16: I wore my lace layering tee and I loved the piece, but I wasn’t a fan of how I styled it this first time. The tank underneath was the wrong cut and it threw the whole outfit off. I didn’t bring another tank, so we made it work for coffee and brunch, and then it was swimsuit time anyway. I’m definitely styling it differently next time.

Packing List: Clearwater Beach, FL

4/17: Another outfit that reminded me why I love knit tanks. I paired a knit tank with the same shorts, my Reef sandals, and my thrifted bag. Nothing complicated, because I knew we wouldn’t be in “real outfits” for long.

Packing List: Clearwater Beach, FL

4/18: Second outfit with the thrifted linen shorts. I want to style them differently once I’m home and have more options, but for this trip I packed simple and rotated tanks and sandals.

Chapter 4: Back home again (rainy, cold, and full errand mode)

April Thrifted vs. Styled

4/21: Woke up to rain and cold weather, so it was a sweater + trench kind of day. I wore a beautiful brown sweater I’d bought recently (and was happy to wear now instead of waiting for fall), paired with bootcut jeans, boots, my thrifted trench coat, and my blue suede purse. I had a bunch of errands and this kept me warm and dry in and out of stores.

4/22: Another chillier day, so I wore my UNICLO white knit sweater top, Ribcage jeans, my fringe bag, and my brown suede boots. It was a big returns day, and I also wanted to stop by the Goodwill Boutique since I hadn’t been in about a month, just to see if anything was worth it.

Chapter 5: Birthday dinner outfit

4/24: It was our daughter’s 12th birthday (how is that even possible?), and we were heading out to dinner. I wore my inky H&M jeans, a layering tank, and a new-to-me knit lace tee from Thrift Giant, finished with black booties. It felt like the perfect mix of comfy and a little dressed up for the night.

Hits, Misses, and Lessons Learned

April was a really good reminder that style is never happening in a vacuum. The weather changed every five minutes, we had a Florida trip in the middle of the month, and real life kept rolling right along with errands, returns, and family plans. And honestly, that’s why I love doing this series, it’s not just “what I bought,” it’s what actually worked when I put it on.

Hits (what worked really well)

  • Light layers were the MVP in DFW spring weather. The cold fronts and chilly mornings made me so grateful for pieces like the denim button down, sweaters, and coats I could throw on and still feel cute.
  • Knit tops and tanks were perfect for vacation. They’re easy, breathable, and still feel a little more styled than a basic tee, especially in hot, humid Florida weather.
  • Thrifted accessories pulled outfits together. The thrifted bag on vacation ended up being the perfect “one bag” choice, and I love when a purse or belt makes an outfit feel finished without adding effort.
  • Having go-to outfit formulas made getting dressed easier. Jeans + a good top + boots for errands, shorts + tank + sandals for vacation, and sweater + trench on rainy days. Simple, repeatable, and realistic.

Misses (or, things that didn’t quite land)

  • The lace layering tee wasn’t styled right the first time. I loved the lace tee itself, but the tank underneath was the wrong cut and it threw the whole look off. Not a fail, just a styling note for next time.
  • The linen shorts fit wasn’t perfect. They fit in the waist but were roomy in the hips and thighs. Still comfortable and wearable for vacation, but I want to play with styling and fit a little more when I’m home.

Lessons learned (what I’m taking into May)

  • Vacation packing is the ultimate styling test. When you only bring a handful of pieces, you learn quickly what actually works together, what feels good, and what you’ll realistically wear.
  • A great piece still needs the right supporting pieces. The lace tee moment reminded me that styling details matter, especially with layering tops. Necklines and cuts make or break the outfit.
  • Thrifting continues to work best when it supports real outfits. My favorite finds are always the ones that slide into my closet easily and help me get dressed faster, not the ones that require a whole new outfit to make sense.

Looking Ahead

Going into May, I’m trying to keep things simple and intentional. April had a lot of moving parts, weird DFW spring weather, vacation outfits, and then jumping right back into real life, and it was a good reminder that the best wardrobe is the one that works for your actual days.

Here’s what I’m focusing on next month:

  • Keep thrifting with intention. I want the thrill of finding a gem to stay fun, but I don’t want the thrift store to turn into a free-for-all. If it doesn’t fit into my closet and my real outfits, it’s a no.
  • Re-wear and re-style my April finds. I want to get multiple wears out of the pieces I was excited about this month (especially the faux fur bag and the knit tops) and keep experimenting with different outfit combos.
  • Refine my layering game. April reminded me that styling is often won or lost with the “supporting pieces,” like the right tank under a lace top or the right layer when the weather changes.
  • Stay aligned with my low-buy goals. The goal is still to shop less, shop smarter, and keep focusing on pieces that fill real gaps, not boredom buys.
